Burchick began work on the Allegheny Valley Railroad project in October 2022. The scope of our work includes construction of a new locomotive maintenance building and fueling facility.
The project has several challenges such as working in an occupied and active rail yard in Glenwood, on a site with extensive underground and above ground utilities. The site is quite old, and an abundance of unforeseen conditions have been encountered. These conditions include uncharted underground electrical and mechanical utilities. IN addition, several unknown subsurface foundations were encountered that require removal to permit the installation of the new work.
One of the major features of this project is to coordinate and construct a pre-engineered metal building, including foundations, within the active rail yard. This work includes rail foundations, building foundations, and a significant amount of above and below ground electrical and mechanical services for locomotive maintenance support.
One very important aspect of this project is to coordinate the design and erection of the pre-engineered building with a new overhead bridge crane and ceiling mounted HVAC systems. This coordination effort is important to ensure proper clearance space for safe and efficient railroad operations. Burchick will be working closely with the railroad representatives, the design engineers, and our equipment vendors to ensure no building features will interfere with or interrupt railroad maintenance activities.
The pre-engineered building and related concrete work is now substantially complete. The associated MEP services are also nearing completion. Allegheny Valley Railroad is expected to occupy the facility sometime in 2nd quarter 2024.
