GOVERNMENT PROJECTS

UNITED STATES POST OFFICE & FEDERAL COURTHOUSE POST OFFICE FLOOR   |  Pittsburgh, PA
Owner  US General Services Administration (GSA)
Architect  Oudens Knoop Knoop + Sachs Architects
Cost  $600,000

The flooring throughout the post office area of this historic building was comprised of creosote-saturated wood blocks with asbestos-laden mastic over a structural concrete slab.  This project involved removal of all materials down to the structural slab and replacement with a new lightweight concrete topping slab in the heaviest cart traffic areas.

This project also involved extensive removal and replacement of masonry walls in order to remove the wood block floor construction.  The work was performed in several phases as it was imperative that the operations of the post office were not interrupted.
